You may not know it but Tank just may be one of the most important bands to Heavy Metal and yet you never even heard of them. Formed by former Damned member Algy Ward, Tank is a part of the legendary New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement and they are a band that I just stumbled upon on my never ending quest to find new (to me) music. I had never heard one note from Tank but when I heard their song “Filth Hounds Of Hades” on a NWOBHM playlist I just had to hear more.
After tracking down a very hard to find copy of their debut album Filth Hounds of Hades, I just couldn’t wait to dive head first into it. The minute the first track “Shellshock” kicked in I thought to myself, “These guys sound like Paul Dianno fronting Motorhead.” “Blood Guts and Beer” is such a great fucking song and how this song didn’t become a timeless metal anthem is beyond me. “That’s What Dreams are Made Of” sounds like something Def Leppard would’ve done on “On Through the Night” while the title track sounds like it pretty much single handedly could’ve launched the thrash metal movement.
Filth Hounds of Hades is a heaping helping of classic NWOBHM that is a true piece of buried treasure. It’s a sonic piece of history that totally deserves to be listened to and respected and a truly important piece of Heavy Metal history. I can’t say much for the other albums that Tank released after this one because I haven’t heard them but I can say this much. Tank’s Filth Hounds of Hades quickly became one of my favorite NWOBHM albums and it blows me away to hear such a relevant yet forgotten album.
About The Author
I have been running this blog since 2009. AKA as the Great Southern Brainfart, Southeast of Heaven is my baby now and forever. I’ve had my ups and downs with bands over the years but they are all great experiences and memories. My Swedish friend Charlie said once, “Don is known for being one of the meanest bastards in American rock journalism.” It’s nice to be loved.
I also once took a shit in Anthrax’s dressing room toilet and didn’t flush.
