It was a night of Gothic metal at the Masquerade in Atlanta, GA featuring three now legendary bands of the genre. Kicking things off was the “newest” of the pack, Deathstars who have been around for 15 years. The crowd was a bit on the small side but their fans were very much adoring fans an very vocal. Deathstars, decked out in industrial/military gear, put on a great performance of danceable, goth music with a stage presence that had the audience completely riled up. Deathstars reminded me of the more dancey industrial/metal bands like Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, and Aesthetic Perfection.

Moonspell went on 2nd and did a great job putting on a very solid performance. Their performance was great and they totally lived up to their recorded music. At this point there were a lot of metal and goth/industrial fans here. Their music totally reminded me of Type O Negative. The audience was totally into them but as opposed to moshing, they were more so just swaying back and forth to the music. Moonspell is the perfect band for those fans of gothic/metal crossover type of music. This was also one of the only shows I’ve been to where there was a solid mix of goth and metal fans which is something I don’t see at shows.

Septicflesh was by far the heaviest of the night. They were having a bit of technical difficulty between the 2nd and 3rd song but they managed to work it all out. The crowd was totally into them and I have to say that their drummer’s double bass drumming was fast and impressive. This was also the only band that anyone really moshed for. Septicflesh put on a great performance and it was a great way to end the night!
