Freedom Call – Master of Light
Release Date: November 11, 2016
Label: SPV Steamhammer
Let me just cut to the chase here. Why is it that most power metal is so musically great while the lyrics tend to sound like they were written by a 13 year old kid who spends all his breathing hours playing Dungeons and Dragons? Allow me to give you an example:
Metal is for everyone, stronger than the law.
A band of steel eternally, a union of the strong.
Didn’t Manowar already write this song like 30 times? I just don’t get it. Maybe it’s part of the escapism or something but in all honesty, when I hear crap like this, it’s no wonder why people make fun of metal fans. When I think of the late, great Ronnie James Dio, who was basically the reigning king of epic metal anthems, even at his cheesiest there was still a level of sincerity. Listening to Freedom Call, I get no sense of sincerity and I just have to shake my head as they deliver song after song of contrived, played out, insincere metal clichés.
Here’s the deal. Musically, Freedom Call is monstrously talented. These guys have the chops, the epic metal production, and the singer is absolutely mind blowing. The $1,000,000 question though is why would a band waste so much talent on such shitty songs? Freedom Call is proof that anyone can write heavy metal songs but not everyone can do it well and with integrity. I’m not sure just how serious Freedom Call takes themselves but for me, I would file them along with Steel Panther as one big ass joke.
