Valhalla Lights – My Gracious Highway
Release Date: April 6, 2018
Look out Sweden. It looks like Australia has offered up a band that has put out one of my favorite releases of 2018. Valhalla Lights is a band that totally caught my attention this year and their latest album My Gracious Highway. It’s hard to pin down just what Valhalla Lights is genre wise but all I can say is that they cover a broad spectrum of this kind of music that I love so dearly.
Opening track “Rise Above” rings out influences of Hawkwind and Uriah Heep while “Opposite Sides” reminds me of something that Rosalie Cunningham and Purson would have done if they were more groove oriented and less psych rock. “Hammer the Witch” even has as small dose of early Gish era Smashing Pumpkins infused with this kind of cosmic, spacey sound that plays as a consistent theme throughout the album. “Crucify” is the stand out track to me as this song packs a spacey, groove oriented blow to the dome that would make Monster Magnet proud and “World of Fire” is something I could totally hear Lucifer doing.
Valhalla Lights is a band that has managed to combine many of the aspects of heavy music that I love so much into one big ass goulash. My Gracious Highway is definitely and cosmic journey for the senses and is an album that I was able to completely lose myself in. My Gracious Highway is a dose of stratospheric, cosmic hard rock n’ roll of epic proportions. With vocals rooted in psych rock ala Purson and music rooted in the cosmic sounds of bands like Captain Beyond and Monster Magnet, Valhalla Lights has created an album with enough groove to shift the planets completely out of orbit. Strap in tight because this is without a doubt going to be a liftoff of NASA proportions.
