Album Review: Dorian Sorriaux – Hungry Ghost

Dorian Sorriaux – Hungry Ghost
Release Date: June 29, 2018

This has been a busy fucking year for The Brainfart. Started off kind of slow but then before I knew it, albums were flying at me left and right. Psych rock, stoner rock, metal, thrash, you name it. It was all coming at me faster than I could keep up with it so even though it was a late comer, the debut psychedelic folk release by Blues Pills guitarist Dorian Sorriaux was just the thing I needed to slow down the pace.

Whenever I hear that someone from a particular band is breaking away to do a “folk” album or something remotely different from the band they’re known for, I always go into it with an air of caution. “Huitoto” (pronounced we-toe-toe) opened the album and right away I felt my blood pressure drop, my eyes close, and I could feel myself swept away down this haunting river of sweet sounds. With its sparse instrumentation and Neil Young meets David Crosby vocals of Sorriaux, “Huitoto” was one hell of a song to walk right into upon opening the door.

The title track, “Hungry Ghost” definitely had a more David Crosby feel to it and much like the first song, it had me continuing this slow, brooding journey of the senses that, while listening on headphones, made me feel as if there were only two people in existence: myself and Dorian Sorriaux. This is an experience that not just any and/or every band can make the listener feel but when it is felt, you know that it is something truly special.

I don’t think that people quite understand the challenge to creating music like this. It’s so much more than just picking up an acoustic guitar. Folk music comes from the soul and it’s rooted so deep into our DNA that it is very easy to pick up who’s doing it to be hip and who’s doing it because it is a part of them. That being said, “Hungry Ghost” is a huge part of Dorian Sorriaux that he has shared with us.

Dorian Sorriaux has opened himself up and released all of the pent up creative energy and created an album that feels like an old friend or even a warm, weighted blanket to wrap yourself up in when life gets just a bit too heavy. I can only hope that this is just the beginning of what we will hear from Sorriaux and if this 4 song EP is any indication, this just a small example of the journeys that Dorian Sorriaux will lay down for us.
