Sadly over-looked, underappreciated, but extremely influential, Captain Beyond is a band that gave birth to a debut album that would inspired generations of cosmic, psychedelic rock bands that have found various levels of success. Influencing and inspiring everyone from Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters to modern bands such as Monster Magnet, Scorpion Child, and Crobot, the music of Captain Beyond is proof alone that less is more.
Captain Beyond achieved artistically more with a single album than many bands do in a lifetime. Anyone that has heard this album can attest to the magical and even at times spiritual qualities of this collection of songs. Not even billing themselves as a super group, Captain Beyond was so much more than that. Rod Evans (Deep Purple) on vocals, Bobby Caldwell (Johnny Winter And/Allman Brothers Band) on drums, Rhino Reinhardt on guitar, and Lee Dorman on bass (both of Iron Butterfly, respectively) were more than a super group. They were a cosmic entity that forged a sound and a style that continues to prosper to this day.
Every great psychedelic/doom band of the last 20 years will tell you that without a doubt, Captain Beyond is a huge influence and this is why I feel that Captain Beyond deserves the recognition that they have so deserved for the longest time. There’s no time like the present folks. Let your voices be heard and tell the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame that CAPTAIN BEYOND IS NOW!
