40 years ago when I was, well not even thought of yet, a little band from Birmingham, England released an album that changed the world of music and planted a foot into a world that would later be expanded upon for many many years to come. Black Sabbath’s debut album was released on February 13th, 1970 in the UK (and on June 1st, 1970 in the US) and not only featured a sound that had yet to be heard but also an album cover that would scare the living shit out of me as an 11 year old. You all know what a huge Dio nutswinger I am and I even favor a the Dio era Sabbath albums to most of the Ozzy era albums but this debut is absolutely untouchable. I can remember putting this album on and listening to the opening track “Black Sabbath” wondering if I should continue on. Just like anyone watching a scary movie, you want to continue on just to see what happens even if it does scare the shit out of you. As the album progressed I found it to be less scary and more just a fucking kick ass record. “The Warning”, “The Wizard” and “NIB” absolutely floored me and the songs had such vivid imagery to them but it was “Behind The Wall of Sleep” that blew my mind. To this day I still believe that song to be one of the greatest Metal songs of all time from one of the greatest Metal albums of all time!
