Ian Anderson, the brainchild and creative force behind progressive folk masters Jethro Tull, has returned with a new album called The Zealot Gene that will be released on January 28th, as always, under the Jethro Tull moniker. Why not? Anderson is pretty much Jethro Tull so good on him.
The Zealot Gene is Tull’s first release since 2000’s The Jethro Tull Christmas Album. The Zealot Gene is a kick ass album and in my honest opinion shows that Ian Anderson can combine both the classic, folk-rooted sound of the Jethro Tull of past and give it a modern flair that has them fitting very comfortably in the modern movement of psychedelic rock bands. Even bands that were Tull influenced such as Blood Ceremony and Germany’s Wucan would be more than happy to have Jethro Tull playing beside them as peers and not just an “old influence.”
Jethro Tull has released a video for the title track for the new album and Ian Anderson had this to say about the track:
“The title track offers many allusions to the radical, politically-charged world of populism in leadership. As a song lyric, it sums up, for me, the divisive nature of societal relationships and the extreme views which fuel the fires of hate and prejudice, more so today perhaps, than at any time in history. Perhaps you think you know who I might have been thinking about here but, in reality, there are probably right now at least five prominent, dictatorial national figures who could fit the bill.”.
