Album Review: Wilma Nea – This Too Shall Pass

Singer/Songwriter Wilma Nea is an artist that has had my attention lately, and rightfully so. Nea is a member of the Swedish psychedelic/roots rock collective Children of the Sun but don’t expect just an offshoot of that band. Instead of releasing similar music, Wilma Nea surprisingly stepped out into her own and released a pop/rock gem of an album with the release of her debut full-length solo album, This Too Shall Pass. Maybe this isn’t a surprise to people who are a part of her closer-knit inner circle, but to me, it was a surprise and a very pleasant one at that.

This Too Shall Pass is a seven-song sugar-sweet pop/rock gem that checks off a broad range of some of my favorite pop/rock performers. Elements of modern artists such as Sara Bareilles and Nellie McKay marry perfectly with unintentional ‘90s pop/rock influences on the Jellyfish inspired songs “The Beginning” and “Days Like This” and the Frente! inspired “Part of a Club.” However, “Stoked” just may be one of the best pop songs I have heard in a long time, tugging at my heartstrings with a hook so strong that it brought me back for several listens.

This Too Shall Pass is an album that took me back to a simpler, more carefree time when pop music was simple, imaginative, and fun to listen to. Wilma Nea created a body of work that is guaranteed to put a bounce in your step and a much-needed smile on your face. The world is a pretty heavy place these days, and This Too Shall Pass is the album we all could use to have in our ears and hearts.
