Legendary prog rock guitarist Mike Keneally is not one to just stand silently when the US is going up in flames as a huge fucking dumpster fire.
In a time when many professional artists are keeping quiet, seeing someone like Mike Keneally step up and shout it from the rooftops takes the sting out of it all just a little.
Recently, Keneally took to his social media platforms to deliver a personal message to the people that will either make them feel seen and not alone (like me) or it will send any MAGArbage fans be may have running back in to woods to tell paw about the mean guitar man on the interwebs.
“This is fucking real.
This is fucking happening.
Shame on all who elected this disgusting son of a bitch president for a second time.
I’ve stopped myself from posting angrily at least twenty times this week.
On Monday I’d just gotten on the plane after an amazing week working in Canada and saw the news about the arrest and incarceration of an American citizen solely because of his opinions, which is just about the most un-American thing I can think of. (This on top of my brain already bubbling from that list of words that can get an initiative defunded – you know, horrific words like “women,” “expression” and “minority” – and the expulsion of the Associated Press from White House briefings, and all the indiscriminate, gleeful, chainsaw-waving job eliminations and any other number of justifiable reasons for bile-boiling outrage.) I wanted nothing more than to get off the plane, stay in Canada and renounce my US citizenship.
For anyone reading this whose gut response is “why don’t you do that,” trust me, it’s very much on my mind.
Also, if that thought entered your mind in a hackneyed “America – love it or or leave it” bullshit kinda way, do us both a favor and unfriend me right fucking now.
I DO LOVE AMERICA. THAT’S WHY MY HEART IS BREAKING.
Ok I’m gonna stop looking at Facebook while I’m supposed to be learning this impossible stuff I’m playing on “The Moth” at the end of the month. Losing myself in music is the only thing that can bring me anything resembling sanity right now.”
Thank you, Mike Keneally for your words. As David Crosby said many moons ago, “you gotta separate the wheat from the chaff.”
