Every so often I get TOTALLY floored by a band. It doesn’t matter what genre. A few years ago it was Neko Case. Then after than, Old Crow Medicine Show. Then one day, a good buddy of mine Spoob was telling me about this band he had seen at Ozzfest one year called Lacuna Coil. He was telling me that they were kinda goth, kinda nu-metal, but they had both a male and female singer. I’m never one to be excited about listening to “nu-metal” at all but Spoob is a good judge of bands so I gave them a try. What I heard was absolutely mind blowing. I heard songs that were so full of music. The first album I heard was the bands breakthrough American album called Comalies. The album was just full of nothing but great songs. They are heavy and dark yet full of melody and beautiful. The chemistry between singers Andi Ferro and Cristina Scabbia is just undeniable and it really pulls you into the song. Songs like “Daylight Dancer”, “Tight Rope”, and the gorgeous title track “Comalies” which was even performed in their native Italian language. This was one hell of an album and it really was an amazing introduction to this fantastic band.
After hearing this album, I picked up their critically acclaimed follow-up “Karmacode”. The production wasn’t quite as good as Comalies but the songs really carried on that dark yet melodic sound that I feel is pretty much their “sound”. The songs were a bit darker lyrically and the tone is something that Tony Iommi and Sabbath would be proud to hear. The songs were fantastic and even spawned a few videos such as “Our Truth”, “Closer”, and “Enjoy The Silence”.
This was probably the song that really brought Lacuna Coil to the attention of a lot of music listeners but unlike most bands, the popularity of a cover doesn’t hurt them. They perform this Depeche Mode classic with nothing but pure passion and intensity. They really made that song “THEIRS”. They were able to showcase how talented and melodic they are yet show their creativeness by not just covering a song but taking ownership if it! That’s not an easy or common feat by most musicians/bands but they did this with pure ease!I was lucky enough to see them live on the “Karmacode” tour and they were absolutely amazing. Not since Iron Maiden in 1992 have I seen an audience so excited to see a band. They knew every word to every song and the band just poured everything had inside of them out on the stage. They love their audience and thanked us many times for the love and support. It’s so nice to see a metal band with thought provoking and emotional lyrics who are also generally modest and nice people. I’m so proud to be a fan of this band and I look forward to the future with them! They are here to say!
Turn them on and see what I’m talking about!
