Every since hearing their 2002 album Comalies thanks to my buddy Spoob, I have been a huge Lacuna Coil fan. With each album the band seemed to experiment with new songwriting techniques in order to somewhat break a mold that they very well could have been casting. With each album, Lacuna Coil experimented with different sounds and different ways of doing things. For some fans, they felt that the band should have made another Comalies but really? With the exception of AC/DC fans, who wants to hear the same album 5 times? Dark Adrenaline, Lacuna Coil’s 6th and latest album, has the band once again doing what makes me love them so much; taking chances and not making any apologies.
Dark Adrenaline has all the elements of everything that worked in their favor on both Karmacode and Shallow Life. The catchy and melodic aspects of Shallow Life are there in songs like “Give Me Something More”, “Trip The Darkness“ and the more heavy and dark personalities of songs like “The Army Inside” and “Upside Down” are reminiscent of their Karmacode album. The production is stellar and the performances are the same top notch performances one would come to expect from Lacuna Coil. The only song that didn’t do it for me was their cover of REM’s “Losing My Religion.” Their cover of Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy The Silence” on Karmacode was so outstanding but this one just kind of falls flat in a huge way. Lacuna Coil definitely redeems themselves with “My Spirit” which is not only a great closer but probably one of their best songs to date.
In all honesty, this album as a whole was really enjoyable for me. I wouldn’t call it their best album, but Dark Adrenaline definitely proves that Lacuna Coil is still very capable of putting out some quality material. Lacuna Coil makes the music that truly makes them happy. No matter how much their fans may bitch about it not being Comalies, the fact that they continue to support and cheer the band on shows that Lacuna Coil just may know their audience better than they know themselves.
